There seem to be an endless number of conference opportunities available for brokers-owners, team leaders, and agents today. Your brokerage brand will soon be holding its annual or regional conference.
Professional conferences offer a unique opportunity to network, get new ideas and deepen connections. The conference itself can be as important as the actions you take.
Yet, so many of us fail in our duty to act. Why?
You probably felt overwhelmed after you returned from the conference with a lot of information to process and a feeling that you were overwhelmed. Make a post-conference plan that empowers and guides you. Action is the key to a successful post conference routine. No matter what conference you attended, my four-step postconference guide might be of value to you.
Here are my four steps for maximising your conference investment.
Network after-event
Keep in touch with the people you have made connections. Follow up, close the loop and establish relationships for referrals, accountability, and more.
Leverage your social channels
Online communication of your investments will show potential customers that you are committed to excellence and that you are committed to serving them at their highest level. To help your customers and potential clients better, create public posts based upon the information you received at the conference.
Organize your notes into a checklist
With a mentor, coach, or accountability partner, share the conference items that you are committed to implementing. Do you have a checklist? A checklist is not only useful for getting more done, but also a great way to get your brain to love them. Maria Konnikova, best-selling author, has summarized the reasons.
Your mind is drawn to organization. Lists tap into our preferred way of receiving and organizing information at a subconscious level; from an information-processing standpoint, they often hit our attentional sweet spot. Information is processed spatially when we process it. It’s difficult to remember the grocery list we need to purchase by brute force. It is easier to remember everything if you write it down in bulleted points or numbers.
Your mind wants to categorize. Information that is too clumped and undifferentiated (like standard paragraphs) can slow down our ability to process it quickly. A list is more intuitive.
Your mind wants to know how much time it will take. The greater our knowledge about something, including how long it will take, the more likely we are to commit to it.
List completion is self-reinforcing. We are happy to have checked off something on the list. This makes us want another dopamine hit and we go back to the list. Do your brain a favor by forming a series checklists that summarize what you have learned and the actions you took.

Don’t wait! You will never see anything good if you wait.
